The Department of Defense is offering internships for individuals current pursuing a high school diploma/GED, Bachelor's degree or Master's degree at the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA), Offutt AFB, Nebraska.
What will I be doing?
As an ORISE participant, you will join a community of forensic scientists and researchers conducting forensic archaeological research. You will perform ETL processes and validate existing static DPAA data and create modern graphical presentations depicting the relationship among temporary and permanent WWII cemeteries across Europe. You will mine data from primary and secondary sources of resolved casualties associated with current and planned DPAA Special Projects. By researching and recreating the relevant within and between cemetery structure, not only DPAA but also the larger research community gains a better understanding of WWII remains movement. This research also provides the opportunity to develop alternative short lists of unresolved casualties for a set of unknown remains to effect a positive identification of a missing service member.

- Experience in research design, implementation, and release to communities of interest through web-based and traditional print publications in academic journals.

What is the anticipated start date?
DPAA is ready to make appointments immediately. Exact start dates will be determined at the time of selection and in coordination with the selected candidate. Applications are reviewed on an ongoing basis and internships or fellowships will be filled as qualified candidates are identified.
What is the appointment length?
An ORISE appointment period can be a short-term (less than 2 weeks), summer (10-12 weeks), or yearlong appointment. Faculty appointments are generally for 10-12 weeks during the summer, but appointments during the academic year are also available. Appointments may be extended depending on funding availability, project assignment, program rules, and availability of the participant.
What are the benefits?
You will receive a stipend to be determined by DPAA. Stipends are typically based on a participant’s academic standing, discipline, experience, and research facility location. Other benefits may include the following:

The Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) is responsible for finding and recovering missing US Service Members from our Nation's past conflicts. DPAA is a Department of Defense (DoD) joint military organization comprised of military service members, DoD civilians, and contractors, with offices in Hawaii, Washington DC, and Omaha, NE. About ORISE
This program, administered by Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and DoD. Participants do not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DoD or any other office or agency. Instead, you will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE. The qualified candidate will be currently pursuing a high school diploma/GED, Bachelor's degree or Master's degree.
Highly competitive applicants will have knowledge and experience, in historic and forensic archaeology, ArcGIS, geographic spatial analysis, and archival research of primary and secondary sources.
