Description

The DOE Scholars Program is designed to attract talented undergraduate and graduate students, and recent graduates to research, technical and professional opportunities within U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Loans Program Office (LPO).  The LPO seeks to develop future leaders in advanced energy technology and energy project finance.

About LPO

The Department of Energy LPO finances large-scale, all-of-the-above energy infrastructure projects in the United States. The office administers three distinct loan programs, the Advanced Technology Vehicles Manufacturing Direct Loan Program, the Title 17 Innovative Energy Loan Guarantee Program, and the Tribal Energy Loan Guarantee Program, with more than $40 billions in loan and loan guarantee authority currently available. To date, LPO has issued more than $35 billions of loans and loan guarantees for more than 30 projects and has a proven track record including transforming existing energy infrastructure, reviving nuclear construction, accelerating growth of utility-scale solar and wind, expanding domestic manufacturing of electric vehicles, and improving the lives of all Americans by catalyzing energy technology and creating jobs. For more information about the Loan Program Office, please visit https://www.energy.gov/lpo/loan-programs-office


Benefits

  • Stipends
    • Undergraduate students: starting at $700/week
    • Graduate students and postgraduates: starting at $750/week
  • Inbound/Outbound Travel: Up to $1,000 for participants who relocate more than fifty miles, one-way, from the assigned hosting site.
  • Other allowances: Depending on your project assignment, duration of appointment and funding availability, you may be eligible to receive an allowance for travel and training to promote the educational goals of your appointment.

Duration

Appointments may vary in length depending on the project assignment. Appointments may be full-time (based on 40 hours per week) or part-time.

Nature of Appointment

The participant will not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DOE, or any other office or agency.  Instead, the participant will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment.

Qualifications

The DOE Scholars Program is open to all students and recent graduates who meet the following qualifications:

  • Be a U.S. Citizen at the time of application.
  • Be 18 years of age or older by desired start date.
  • Meet one of the following conditions:
    • Be enrolled as an undergraduate or graduate student at an U.S. accredited institute of higher education.
    • Have completed an undergraduate (B.A., B.S. or equivalent) or graduate (M.S., DVM, Ph.D., MD or equivalent) degree within five years of the desired start date.
    • Be a U.S. military Veteran who has been honorably discharged and/or who has been medically discharged because of a service-connected disability and who received a college degree in an appropriate discipline within ten years of the desired start date.
    • Have completed a qualifying certificate program within one year of the desired start date are also eligible for a postgraduate appointment. The qualifying certificate program must be offered by an accredited academic institution; must require a minimum of 30 semester credit hours or the equivalent; must be in an appropriate science, technology, engineering, or math discipline; and should be related to or complement a prior degree earned (bachelor’s degree or higher).
  • Must be pursuing a degree or have a degree in a science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM) discipline or a field that supports the DOE operations mission including but not limited to communications, management, business and law.

  • Transcripts/Academic Records - Unofficial transcripts or copies of the student academic records printed by the applicant or by academic advisors from internal institutional systems may be submitted. Transcripts/Academic Records must include name of the academic institution, name of the student, completed/in progress coursework and grades. Documents must have all social security numbers, student identification numbers, and/or dates of birth removed (blanked out, blackened out, made illegible, etc.) prior to uploading into the application system.
  • Recommendation - You are encouraged to request a recommendation from a professional who can speak to your abilities and potential for success as well as your scientific capabilities and personal characteristics. Recommenders will be asked to complete a recommendation in Zintellect. 

All documents must be submitted via Zintellect. All application components must be received in the system in order to be considered.
