Description

What is the Idaho Cleanup Project?

The Idaho Cleanup Project (ICP) involves the safe environmental cleanup of the U.S. Department of Energy Idaho site, contaminated with legacy wastes generated from World War II-era conventional weapons testing, government-owned research and defense reactors, spent nuclear fuel reprocessing, laboratory research, and other defense missions. The ICP focuses on reducing risks to workers, the public, and the environment, and protecting the Eastern Snake River Plain Aquifer, a sole source aquifer that sustains Idaho's agricultural base and numerous cities.  For more information about the U.S. Department of Energy's Idaho Field Office (DOE-ID), please visit www.id.energy.gov.

Why should I apply?

The internship will provide you a professional opportunity within the Office of Environmental Management (EM) to network/connect with career employees and be part of the dynamic interactions between EM and our contractor, the Office of Nuclear Energy (NE), and other DOE programs.

The internship will involve study of the DOE and regulatory requirements at the Idaho Cleanup Project and be split into two phases. Phase I will encourage group discussions problem solving, lessons learned reviews, and policy reviews. Phase II will include an individualized experience while paired with an environmental management work team. The intern experience project will be based off of topics such as identifying improvement areas in the organization, streamlining processes, developing new ways of doing business, etc. The project will be tailored to the paired intern and mentor experience. Results of the internship project may be presented among intern peers at the annual internship fair. Opportunities to interact with intern peers such as network and educational events, and facility tours of the INL Site will be available.
