The Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) Science, Technology, and Policy (STP) Program serves as a next step in the educational and professional development of scientists, engineers, and professionals by providing opportunities to participate in policy-related projects at DOE's Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) in Washington, D.C. Participants will become part of a group of highly-trained scientists, engineers, and policy experts with the education, background, and experience to support DOE's mission and transition to a clean energy economy.
The Industrial Efficiency and Decarbonization Office (IEDO) is seeking an innovative Fellow to participate in U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) industrial efficiency and decarbonization initiatives to decarbonize the U.S. Forest Products industry. As a Fellow, you will engage and interact closely with IEDO staff and National Laboratory scientists on research, development, and deployment (RD&D) projects that produce significant energy savings and reduction of greenhouse gas emissions across the Forest Products Industry (pulp, paper, and wood products). Fellows will experience full immersion in the Energy- and Emissions-Intensive Industries Program (EEII) and technical projects and activities, interacting with experts in academia, industry, and at the National Labs. Under guidance of a mentor, Fellows will collaborate on guiding an RD&D program focused on developing low-carbon technologies with these experts and partners. Fellows may also engage with other programs at the Department of Energy and across the Federal Government. This Fellowship will last one year, with the opportunity to renew for additional years at the discretion of the sponsoring office.
As a Fellow embedded in the Industrial Efficiency and Decarbonization Office, you will have opportunities to gain experience in the following areas:
- Subject Matter Expertise: Engaging in sharing subject matter expertise to guide the development and implementation of forest products industry decarbonization technologies and developing a strong understanding of the current technical and market barriers to technology development, commercialization, and utilization related to decarbonization.
- Strategic Planning: Contributing to strategic plans for technical research and development that advance the IEDO and EEII mission, resulting in measurable and trackable savings. Experience will involve collaborating with your mentor to develop, maintain, and execute a decarbonization strategy which includes identifying areas of interest and participating in the process for and management of funding awards and projects.
- Program Management: Collaborate on the active project management of IEDO awards to oversee a research, development, and demonstration portfolio of transformative low-carbon pulp, paper, and wood products technologies in the United States. Strong project management skills are a plus.
- Stakeholder Engagement: Engage with DOE staff and contractors in a program of activities to build and maintain relationships with leaders from industry and academia. Gain experience with public-facing aspects of the IEDO forest products industry program.
- Communication: Engage with DOE staff to prepare and present written and oral briefings and reports to senior program staff, DOE leadership, external partners, and industry stakeholders.
Stipend and Benefits
IEDO offers a competitive stipend for participation in this program determined on an individual basis. This Fellowship also offers a range of additional benefits including: medical insurance, a local transportation stipend, and Federal holidays. Relocation expenses incurred in relocating from current address to Washington, D.C. will be reimbursed, in the amount of up to $5,000 (if more than 50 miles from the address shown on the application). Fellows will receive a travel and research allowance of $10,000 per appointment year to cover expenses for scientific and professional development activities. Fellows may be offered an extension for additional years with an increase in stipend and cost of living adjustment. Past Fellows have gone on to take a wide range of permanent positions in industry, academia, and government.

Appointment Start Date
Exact start dates will be determined at the time of selection and in coordination with the selected applicant. Applications are reviewed on an on-going basis and appointments will be offered as qualified candidates are identified over the course of the application cycle, which is usually open for at least one year.

This is a hybrid Fellowship with in-office attendance on Tuesdays.
Nature of Appointment
The Fellow will not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DOE, or any other office or agency. Instead, the Fellow will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE letter of appointment and Terms of Appointment. The initial appointment period will be for one year, with the possibility to extend the appoint for additional years at discretion of the mentor and sponsoring office.
Strong candidates preferably will have:
- Relevant knowledge and experience in forest products industry plant operations, materials, and process technologies associated with pulp, paper, and wood products materials. Operations or RD&D experience is a plus.
- Knowledge of industrial decarbonization technologies to recognize opportunities based on practical considerations and cost/benefit potentials.
- Knowledge of business issues relevant to RD&D in the industrial sector, including key market applications, current & evolving structure of supply chains, and intellectual property considerations relevant to manufacturing technology development.
- Membership in pertinent associations is helpful (Tappi, AIChE, etc.).
- A passion for improving energy efficiency and industrial decarbonization.
- An interest in participating in a multi-disciplinary, metrics-oriented, collaborative environment.
- Strong written, organizational, analytical, and research skills, and a demonstrated capacity for creative thinking.
