The Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) Science, Technology, and Policy (STP) Program serves as a next step in the educational and professional development of scientists, engineers, and professionals by providing opportunities to participate in policy-related projects at DOE's Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) in Washington, D.C. Participants will become part of a group of highly-trained scientists, engineers, and policy experts with the education, background, and experience to support DOE's mission and transition to a clean energy economy.
The Advanced Manufacturing and Manufacturing Technologies Office (AMMTO) is part of the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE). AMMTO invests in manufacturing innovation to accelerate and strengthen clean energy technology manufacturing, material supply chains and the broader clean economy, supporting the growth of a modern, equitable manufacturing industry. Current priority topics for AMMTO include social science methodological approaches to DEIA and the social impact integral to energy justice and energy equity.
Innovation is central to AMMTO's vision, mission, and activities, and AMMTO places a distinct emphasis on benefiting people and communities. As the world economy transitions away from fossil fuels, new opportunities arise to create healthier and more resilient communities, widespread economic prosperity, and good paying jobs across the country. AMMTO is committed to addressing the climate crisis and building a clean, decarbonized economy where the health, economic, and social benefits extend to all levels of society, regardless of ability, race, location, or socioeconomic status. AMMTO’s commitment to environmental justice and energy equity frames the initiatives of the office, as AMMTO works to ensure that no population bears a disproportionate share of negative environmental consequences. Meaningful involvement requires the ability for all communities to make informed decisions and take positive actions to produce environmental justice for themselves.
AMMTO is seeking talented and passionate ORISE Fellows who can collaborate on the social science behind technical, programmatic, strategic, and policy efforts that will meet office EEEJ and DEIA goals and drive innovation in U.S. manufacturing. You will collaborate closely with AMMTO staff – including several former Fellows – and will develop a broad understanding of the social impact potentials of new technologies as well as the socio-economic barriers to equitable access to clean energy, environmental justice, and sustainable development around decarbonization. With guidance from a mentor, you will learn how to:
- Utilize social science expertise to support decision-makers in the areas of environmental justice and energy equity policies, planning and research, sustainable development, engagement with underrepresented communities, and inclusive communication
- Analyze socio-economic needs and opportunities and the potential impacts of program and policy decisions
- Provide input for socio-economic analysis of community development, workforce development, and stakeholder engagement initiatives as they relate to energy equity and environmental justice
- Assess the potential for internal growth and improvement regarding DEIA initiatives in terms of recruiting, hiring, and diversifying AMMTO talent
- Identify and evaluate new critical strategies for regional and community-level sustainable development around America’s decarbonized future
- Act as a social science resource for AMMTO early stage applied research and development projects
- Provide expert guidance, using a DEIA lens, to support AMMTO with adhering to the Department of Energy (DOE)’s DEIA strategic plan and Department-wide DEIA goals and initiatives
- Facilitate and deploy programs and trainings to advance DEIA knowledge, accountability, and culture across AMMTO
- Develop initiatives to strengthen external partnerships and targeted outreach opportunities with diverse organizations
Through these activities, you will help establish and nurture the critical link between DOE decision-makers and other scientific professionals to support public policy.
