The Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) Research Participation Program is designed to provide opportunities for students, postgraduates, established scientists and faculty to participate in programs, projects, and activities that support the mission of the EERE. Participants will hold appointments at DOE-EERE Headquarters, EERE field offices, and other EERE-approved sites. Participants will receive hands-on experience that provides them with an understanding of the mission, operations, and culture of EERE.
The EERE Solar Energy Technologies Office (SETO) Postdoctoral Research Awards are intended to be an avenue for significant energy efficiency and renewable energy innovation. The EERE Postdoctoral Research Awards are designed to engage early career postdoctoral recipients in research that will provide them opportunities to understand the mission and research needs of EERE and make advances in research topics of importance to EERE Programs. Research Awards will be provided to exceptional applicants interested in pursuing applied research to address topics listed by the EERE Programs sponsoring the Research Awards.
Applicants may submit one research proposal on one research topic. Proposals must be approved by the research mentor listed in the application. Research topic areas include:
- S-501 Applying Data Science to Solar Cost Reduction
- S-502 Solar Systems Integration
- S503 Concentrating Solar Thermal for Electricity, Chemicals, and Fuels
- S504 Photovoltaic Materials, Devices, Modules, and Systems
Participant Benefits
Participants will receive a yearly stipend of $65,000. EERE will authorize a stipend increase to offset the costs of health insurance. Participants are eligible to purchase the health insurance plan offered through ORISE. A relocation allowance may be provided for participants relocating to the hosting facility. Participants will receive a $10,000 allowance for education and/or scientific activities as approved by EERE. Additionally, the mentor will receive a $5,000 allowance to support the participant during the appointment.
This opportunity is available to U.S. citizens and Lawful Permanent Residents (LPR).

Nature of Appointment
The participant will not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DOE, or any other office or agency. Instead, the participant will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment.
