CDC Office and Location: A fellowship opportunity is available with the Office of Laboratory Science and Safety (OLSS) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), in Atlanta, Georgia.

The mission of OLSS is to strengthen the culture of laboratory science and safety through leadership, collaboration, and continual quality improvement and is comprised of the Office of the Director, the Office of Laboratory Science and the Office of Laboratory Safety. OLSS leads CDC through the complexities of laboratory science and safety, promotes the continual improvement of laboratory quality, acts as points of communication and collaboration, defines policy and compliance, and provides training and growth opportunities for over 1,700 scientists, in over 200 laboratories in 8 domestic CDC locations.

Research ProjectThe OLSS Health Equity fellow will facilitate OLSS’ Health Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Committee that was established in April 2021 in support of CDC’s vision to cultivate an equitable, diverse, and inclusive work environment. Specifically, the committee coordinates and promotes innovative approaches and training that reflects health equity, diversity and inclusion principles and best practices for both OLSS staff and the CDC laboratory community. As chair of the committee, the individual will also be responsible for OLSS achieving its CORE health equity goals and the reporting of related milestones and accomplishments, as well as represent OLSS on cross-agency and interagency health equity committees and initiatives. The OLSS Health Equity Fellow will assist in accelerating OLSS’ progress related to health equity and will work to expand organizational capacity to address health inequities in addition to increasing the visibility of health equity activities in OLSS and across CDC’s laboratory activities.

Learning Objectives: Under the guidance of a mentor, the participant will train with staff on opportunities that may include:

  • Participating in quantitative and qualitative data development, review, and analysis related to laboratory health equity initiatives both within the OLSS and across the CDC laboratory community
  • Analyzing data on health equity science and developing reports, guidance, and planning documents that help to define health equity activities for laboratory science at CDC
  • Supporting quality and safety components of CDC’s laboratory workforce that encompass health equity
  • Participating in collaborative engagement with health equity science teams and contributing to projects that focus on different aspects of CDC’s overall CORE Health Equity Initiative; working across partners to ensure alignment and reporting key initiatives and progress in coordination with the OLSS Science and Communications Senior leadership.
