CDC Office and Location: A fellowship opportunity is currently available in the Division of Overdose Prevention (DOP), Prevention Programs and Evaluation Branch (PPEB), Program Evaluation Team at the National Center for Injury Prevention and Control (NCIPC) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) located in Atlanta, Georgia. The team currently operates in a hybrid in person and virtual environment. The fellow must live or be willing to relocate within 50 miles of the CDC Chamblee, GA campus.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is one of the major operation components of the Department of Health and Human Services. CDC works to protect America from health, safety and security threats, both foreign and in the U.S. Whether diseases start at home or abroad, are chronic or acute, curable or preventable, human error or deliberate attack, CDC fights disease and supports communities and citizens to do the same.
Research Project: The selected participant will have the opportunity to be mentored under the Program Evaluation Team to support the Overdose Data to Action (OD2A) program by helping to transform performance measurement and programmatic data into data visualizations. The selected fellow will manage and clean data collected and shared by health departments and prepare data products for dissemination. Main activities will be to develop a data reporting tool with data quality checks that can be used by health departments; develop and facilitate processes for data cleaning and data management; coordinate with team members to review data shared by health departments to identify data quality challenges; design data reporting tools to be used in a Power Bi dashboard that the fellow develops; and provide insight into the development of dashboards and additional data visualizations that integrate data from various sources--including additional data collected and shared by health departments and other publicly-available data sources.

Anticipated Appointment Start Date: July 5, 2023. Start date is flexible and will depend on a variety of factors. Date is anticipated based on CDC in-processing time frame.
Appointment Length: The appointment will initially be for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC and is contingent on the availability of funds.
Level of Participation: The appointment is full-time.
Participant Stipend: The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. The participant will receive a starting monthly stipend of about $5000. Health insurance is required and available through ORISE with an additional stipend starting at $560 a month for individuals (more for families). The qualified candidate should have received a bachelor's or master's degree in one of the relevant fields, or be currently pursuing one of the degrees with completion before December 31, 2023. Degree must have been received within five years of the appointment start date.
