CDC Office and Location: A fellowship opportunity is currently available in the Poxvirus and Rabies Branch (PRB) within the National Center for Zoonotic and Emerging Infectious Diseases (NCEZID) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, GA.
Research Project: The Poxvirus Epidemiology Team provides technical assistance and expertise for surveillance and diagnosis of poxviruses to both domestic and international partners. The team provides expertise for media inquiries, websites, and trainings. Projects include monkeypox surveillance in endemic countries, epidemiological risk factor studies, healthcare and public health worker trainings, assessments of surveillance capacity, and new generation smallpox vaccine field studies. The team actively works with other teams to formulate hypotheses and accomplish objectives. The team offers
opportunities to collaborate with domestic and international public health professionals of diverse cultural and scientific backgrounds.
Expectations and training opportunities of the position include:
- Database design and management for epidemiology projects within the branch
- Data cleaning and analysis for surveillance and research data
- Knowledge of Microsoft Access, Excel, and statistical software (SAS, SPSS, R, or similar)
- Aid in scientific study design, with a special emphasis on data collection tools and analyses
- Aid in the implementation of field studies for the branch
- Communications to public health professionals via development of materials and participation in trainings and meetings
- Provide service to clinicians, public health officials, and citizens for the poxvirus phone duty
- Initiate, maintain, and strengthen collaborations with public health professionals within CDC, other agencies, or in international settings
- Development of written scientific reports, including manuscripts
- Additional duties could be assigned to support other critical activities and projects within the team and the Branch
- There are opportunities for attendance at scientific conferences and travel to support the research and surveillance activities for the team
Learning Objectives: As a result of this training the participant will improve their skills in data management for clinical and epidemiological studies. They will learn skills needed in the development, analysis, and publication of public health research projects and hone communication skills necessary for coordination with other partner agencies and the general public.
The qualified candidate should have received a master's degree in one of the relevant fields (e.g. Public Health, Epidemiology, Statistics). Degree must have been received within five years of the appointment start date.

- Ability to perform independent tasks and work collectively with a team to achieve project goals
- Good written and oral communications skills
- Degree: Master's Degree received within the last 60 month(s).
