CDC Office and Location: A fellowship opportunity is currently available in the Division of Foodborne, Waterborne, and Environmental Diseases (DFWED) of the National Center for Emerging and Zoonotic Infectious Diseases (NCEZID) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) located in Atlanta, Georgia.
NCEZID aims to protect public health caused by a wide range of infectious diseases, focusing on diseases that have been around many years, emerging diseases, and zoonotic diseases. Part of this focus on infectious disease transmission involves behavioral health investigations of the interactions between hygiene and health to prevent and control waterborne disease outbreaks.
Research Project: The selected participant will collaborate with a multi-disciplinary team in the Waterborne Disease Prevention Branch to provide scientific and analytical support for behavioral science research in the area of waterborne disease prevention. Activities will include:
- Coordinating with research teams to collect, analyze, and publish findings of both quantitative and qualitative research in peer-reviewed journals
- Providing analytic support to WDPB for quantitative projects
- Drafting program status reports, developing funding proposals, and presenting to program funders and other key stakeholders
- Engaging with new and existing partners to expand reach and identify opportunities for collaboration on waterborne disease prevention
- Translating research methodologies and results for lay audiences
Learning Objectives: The learning objectives for the ORISE fellow will include:
- Gain hands on experience with developing funding proposals, instrument development, data collection, data analysis, and dissemination of research
- Participate in Branch and Division activities and become an subject matter expert (SME) in waterborne disease prevention
- Learn how to engage current and future partners, both internal and external, to expand reach and identify opportunities for collaboration

Anticipated Appointment Start Date: August 22, 2022. Start date is flexible and will depend on a variety of factors.
Appointment Length: The appointment will initially be for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC and is contingent on the availability of funds.
Level of Participation: The appointment is full-time.
Participant Stipend: The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience.
Citizenship Requirements: This opportunity is available to U.S. citizens, Lawful Permanent Residents (LPR), and foreign nationals. Non-U.S. citizen applicants should refer to the Guidelines for Non-U.S. Citizens Details page of the program website for information about the valid immigration statuses that are acceptable for program participation.
ORISE Information: This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE.
The successful applicant(s) will be required to comply with Environmental, Safety and Health (ES&H) requirements of the hosting facility, including but not limited to, COVID-19 requirements (e.g. facial covering, physical distancing, testing, vaccination).

The qualified candidate should have received a master's or doctoral degree in one of the relevant fields (e.g. Public Health, Behavioral Science, Epidemiology, Biostatistics). Degree must have been received within the past five years.
Preferred Skills:
- Experience in conducting research including literature reviews, study design, data collection, quantitative and/or qualitative analysis, and dissemination via presentations or publications
- Familiarity with different software packages such as SAS, SPSS and/or MAXQDA
- Strong research and communication skills in the area of behavioral science
I certify that I have not previously been employed by CDC or by a contractor working directly for CDC. I understand that CDC does not permit individuals with a prior employment relationship with CDC or its contractors to participate as trainees in the ORISE program. (Exceptions may be granted for individuals who, since the previous CDC employment, have obtained a new STEM degree which necessitates training in a new field.)
