A research opportunity is currently available within the Water, Food & Environmental Health Services Branch (WFEHSB), Division of Environmental Health Science and Practice (DEHSP) of the National Center for Environmental Health (NCEH) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Chamblee, Georgia. Due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, CDC is limiting occupancy on campuses. Successful applicants may be required to train remotely until further notice.
WFEHSB’s mission is to enhance and revitalize environmental public health to address a range of environmental health issues. Within WFEHSB, the selected participant will join the Environmental Health Specialists Network (EHS-Net) Team to support their restaurant food safety projects. Under the guidance of a mentor, the participant will obtain training in the following activities:
- Design and implementation of EHS-Net food safety projects
- Quantitative analysis of data collected for EHS-Net food safety projects
- Development of manuscripts based on data from EHS-Net food safety projects
- Development of plain language summaries of these manuscripts
- Planning meetings of EHS-Net sites
The fellow will also obtain training in the National Environmental Assessment Reporting System (NEARS), a reporting system collecting data on foodborne illness outbreak environmental assessments. Specific training activities will include:
- Monitoring data reported to NEARS
- Conducting quality assurance analysis
- Cleaning and analyzing NEARS data according to developed analysis plans
- Developing reports based on NEARS data.
Anticipated Appointment Start Date: December 7, 2020 (start date is flexible)
This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. The initial appointment can be up to one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Funds are available for travel and health insurance allowance. The appointment is full-time at CDC in the Chamblee, Georgia, area. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits.
The qualified candidate should have received a master's degree in one of the relevant fields. Degree must have been received within five years of the appointment start date.
Preferred skills:
- Strong critical thinking and problem solving skills
- Experience conducting data analysis with SAS
- Knowledge/experience with R, and/or Power BI
- Knowledge of infectious diseases, especially foodborne illness
- Knowledge of principles and methods of biostatistics
- Knowledge of epidemiology principles
- Knowledge of key elements of data management and quality assurance
- Ability to understand and interpret analytical results
- Ability to work in a collaborative manner and independently
- Degree: Master's Degree received within the last 60 month(s).
