A summer fellowship opportunity is available in the Division of Laboratory Sciences (DLS) within the National Center for Environmental Health (NCEH) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). DLS develops and applies laboratory science to prevent disease and death caused by exposure to toxic substances, and to improve the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of selected chronic diseases.
Collaborating with a multidisciplinary team, the selected participant will use state-of-the-art equipment to address topics relevant to public health. Opportunities may include:

Developing and applying new analytical methods aimed at characterizing and quantitating biochemical markers that are relevant in environmental exposures and chronic diseases

Assessing a variety of markers in biological specimens (such as serum or urine)

Developing reference materials
This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. The appointment is for one summer (May 22 through July 28, 2017) and is full-time at CDC in the Atlanta, Georgia, area. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits.
- Current undergraduate and graduate students majoring in applied sciences may apply. Chemistry and biology majors are preferred, although highly qualified candidates from other science majors may be considered. Those who have already completed a bachelor's degree and will be enrolled in graduate school in Fall 2017 are also eligible.

- Must be able to comply with safety and security requirements before or upon reporting to CDC.
