CDC Office and Location: A research opportunity is available in the Office of Smoking and Health (OSH) within the National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion (NCCDPHP) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia.

The CDC is one of the major operation components of the Department of Health and Human Services. CDC works to protect America from health, safety and security threats, both foreign and in the U.S. Whether diseases start at home or abroad, are chronic or acute, curable or preventable, human error or deliberate attack, CDC fights disease and supports communities and citizens to do the same.

Research Project: The ORISE candidate would primarily engage with the Managing Editor and Senior Associate Editor of Surgeon General's reports (SGR) on tobacco to support SGR production. Specific activities may include:

• Conducting literature reviews and developing evidence tables
• Reviewing and/or conducting analyses of complex, large data sets
• Addressing reviewer comments and writing and editing scientific content
• Engaging with scientific leaders as reviewers, editors, and authors of report chapters
• Maintaining records of drafts and decisions

Learning Objectives: This training experience would allow the participant to participate in the development of a major scientific report with high visibility. The participant would contribute meaningfully to refining and revising the report's content for publication, and have exposure to leaders in the field of tobacco control who are engaged as editors of the report. The participant's contributions to the report would be recognized in the report's front matter. Activities such as literature reviews, data analyses and reviews of data analyses, and writing and editing will allow the participant to deepen their knowledge of the report topic and experience firsthand the process of writing, editing, and clearing a major scientific governmental report.

Anticipated Appointment Start Date: September 1, 2022.  Start date is flexible and will depend on a variety of factors.

Appointment Length: The appointment will initially be for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC and is contingent on the availability of funds.

Level of Participation: The appointment is full-time.

Participant Stipend: The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience.

ORISE Information: This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE.

The qualified candidate should have received a master's or doctoral degree in one of the relevant fields (e.g. Public Health, Behavioral Sciences, Epidemiology), or be currently pursuing one of the degrees with completion before the appointment start date. Degree must have been received within the past five years.
