CDC Office and Location: Two research training opportunities are currently available as part of the COVID-19 Emergency Operations Center response efforts on the Community Interventions and Critical Populations Task Force/ Disproportionately Affected Populations Team, within the National Center on Birth Defects and Developmental Disabilities (NCBDDD) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia.

Research Project: The purpose of this fellowship program is to provide an educational experience to individuals interested in the field of public health and health equity, including populations of focus (people experiencing homelessness, people with disabilities, older adults, people in correctional institutions, and people who use drugs or have substance use disorder). Opportunities are aimed at furthering the health communication science, epidemiological and analytical knowledge of participants. Participant training involves some or all of the following:

• literature searches
• data analysis and generation of situation reports
• participation in surveillance and research projects including improving design or data quality of infectious disease surveillance for disproportionately affected populations
• translation of scientific research and data into consumer-focused public health information
• use of statistical software and data visualization programs, analyses of data and summarization of findings
• intervention and prevention activities
• utilization of case surveillance data, electronic health record datasets, state public health data, or other data sources
• assessing impact of COVID-19 on populations with a health equity lens focused on generating and implementing public health interventions to alleviate disparities
• verbal and written presentations of epidemiologic studies or surveillance activities at scientific conferences
• preparation of scientific manuscripts, posters, presentations, and fact sheets, and other information

Learning Objectives: Participants are assigned to train on various projects and can expect to gain valuable learning experiences in the development, implementation, and evaluation of surveillance systems, development of health messaging tailored to the needs of populations, and research study management, database cleaning, data analyses, intervention, prevention strategies, interpretation of the results, writing manuscripts and giving oral presentations.

Anticipated Appointment Start Date: Spring 2021.  Start date is flexible and will depend on a variety of factors.

Appointment Length: The appointment will initially be for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC and is contingent on the availability of funds.

Level of Participation: The appointment is full-time.

Participant Stipend: The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience.

ORISE Information: This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE.

The qualified candidate should have received a master's degree in one of the relevant fields. Degree must have been received within five years of the appointment start date.

Preferred Skills:

• Strong writing, verbal, and interpersonal skills
• Experience in qualitative and quantitative research (SAS, SPSS, R, SUDAAN or other statistical software familiarity a plus);  experience with reference management software;  experience with infectious disease surveillance data or other large datasets; experience visualizing data in R, excel, Power BI, or Tableau
• Background/strong interest in epidemiology, health equity, and/or Disproportionately Affected Populations Team populations of focus (correctional health, health among persons experiencing homelessness or people who use drugs or have substance use disorder, older adults, or persons with a disability)
• Flexibility to changes in activities and adaptability to a fast-paced response team environment as the pandemic and its impacts continue to evolve
