CDC Office and LocationA fellowship opportunity is currently available in the Training and Workforce Development Branch (TWDB) within the Center for Surveillance, Epidemiology, and Laboratory Services (CSELS) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) located in Atlanta, Georgia. 

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is one of the major operation components of the Department of Health and Human Services. CDC works to protect America from health, safety and security threats, both foreign and in the U.S. Whether diseases start at home or abroad, are chronic or acute, curable or preventable, human error or deliberate attack, CDC fights disease and supports communities and citizens to do the same.

Research Project: The mission of the CSELS/DLS/Training and Workforce Development Branch (TWDB) is to:

  • a) Apply instructional design support and knowledge of adult learning best practices to help external partners collaboratively develop and assess effective training products to maintain a competent, prepared, and sustainable national clinical and public health laboratory workforce.
  • b) Provide competency-building content across nearly 100 laboratory topics to keep clinical and public health laboratory professionals proficient in areas such as essential laboratory methodologies, new test procedures, informatics, and quality and safety.
  • c) Design innovative, comprehensive, and convenient training programs, featuring state-of-the-art video and graphics production in a variety of formats, including workbooks, hands-on workshops, as well as multimedia-based eLearning, webinars, virtual classrooms, virtual reality, and smartphone apps.
  • d) Support the development, promotion, and adoption of competencies relevant to the laboratory workforce through a national workforce strategic plan and the implementation of public health laboratory competency guidelines.
  • e) Evaluate the efficiency and effectiveness of clinical and public health laboratory education and training, including measuring the outcomes on the transfer of knowledge and skills to improved laboratory practice.

The fellow will research existing clinical and public health laboratory training resources, assess the training needs of clinical and public health laboratory professionals, evaluate the effectiveness of clinical and public health laboratory eLearning and virtual Training of Trainer courses, determine evaluation trends across courses, and recommend strategies to improve the quality and effectiveness of courses.

The fellow will advance evidence-based laboratory training by translating findings into practical recommendations and guidance.

Learning ObjectivesThe fellow will learn what existing clinical and public health laboratory training resources exist, learn how to assess the training needs of clinical and public health laboratory professionals, learn how to evaluate the effectiveness of clinical and public health laboratory eLearning and virtual Training of Trainer courses, learn how to determine evaluation trends across courses, and learn how to recommend strategies to improve the quality and effectiveness of courses.

This opportunity will allow the participant to apply critical skills learned in higher education to real-world training products and develop their competency in evaluating laboratory training needs and resources.

Anticipated Appointment Start Date: October 3, 2022. Start date is flexible and will depend on a variety of factors.

Appointment LengthThe appointment will initially be for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC and is contingent on the availability of funds.

Level of ParticipationThe appointment is full-time.

Participant StipendThe participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience.

Citizenship RequirementsThis opportunity is available to U.S. citizens and Lawful Permanent Residents (LPR).

ORISE InformationThis program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE.

The successful applicant(s) will be required to comply with Environmental, Safety and Health (ES&H) requirements of the hosting facility, including but not limited to, COVID-19 requirements (e.g. facial covering, physical distancing, testing, vaccination).

Qualifications

The qualified candidate should have received a master's degree in one of the relevant fields (e.g. Public Health, Human Factors Research, User-centered Design, Industrial Organizational Psychology, Instructional Design, Instructional Technology, Science Education), or be currently pursuing the degree with completion by December 31, 2022. Degree must have been received within the past five years.
