A faculty opportunity is available in the Office of the Director (OD), Center of Surveillance, Epidemiology and Laboratory Services(CSELS), at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), in Atlanta, Georgia.
The mission of the Office of Public Health Scientific Services (OPHSS) is to lead, promote, and facilitate science, standards and policies to reduce the burden of diseases in the United States and globally. In carrying out its mission, one important component is to develop laboratory workforce who can integrate safety, quality into every aspect of their science work. CDC established Laboratory Leadership Service (LLS) fellowship program in 2015 which is a gateway to a successful laboratory science career for promising early-career laboratory scientists. A competency-based service learning program, LLS focuses on training fellows in laboratory quality management, the science of biosafety, and leadership — building a strong foundation for future public health laboratory leadership and management positions. Additionally, LLS is an important addition to CDC’s portfolio of fellowships.
The ORISE Fellow will have the opportunity to learn from and support the LLS program lead to develop the fellowship program and provide ongoing technical assistance, training and curriculum development. The fellow will participate in planning, evaluation, tracking and program implementation as well as resource material research and development.
This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. The initial appointment is for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. The appointment is full-time at CDC in the Atlanta, Georgia, area. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits.
Applicants must have received a doctoral degree in laboratory related discipline (e.g. biology, microbiology, health science, or a related field) within the last five years of the desired start date, or completion of all requirements for the degree should be expected prior to the start date. Adult training experience teaching scientific content preferred.
