CDC Office and Location: There is a fellowship opportunity available in the Office of the Director (OD), Center for Preparedness and Response (CPR), within the Program Implementation Branch (PIB) of the Division of State and Local Readiness (DSLR) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is one of the major operation components of the Department of Health and Human Services. CDC works to protect America from health, safety and security threats, both foreign and in the U.S. Whether diseases start at home or abroad, are chronic or acute, curable or preventable, human error or deliberate attack, CDC fights disease and supports communities and citizens to do the same.
The Program Implementation Branch (PIB) of the Division of State and Local Readiness (DSLR) supports state, local, tribal, and territorial health departments prepare to respond to disasters. PIB designs, develops and implements a range of training activities through its Applied Learning and Development Team (ALDT). ALDT consists of instructional designers, a health education and training specialist, and public health advisors to ensure training and educational activities meets CDC's quality training standards to best target the needs of state and local public health partners and the division's workforce. ALDT designs and implements training activities and resources on a range of web-based systems and programs in addition to a range of public health emergency preparedness topics.
Research Project: The division's Preparedness Emergency Response System for Oversight, Reporting and Management Services (PERFORMS) system is a dynamic information exchange portal that enables external public health partners to document activities based on CDC's Public Health Emergency Preparedness (PHEP) Cooperative Agreement. Recipients of the PHEP grant use PERFORMS to document their preparedness plans and note how benchmarks have been or will be accomplished during the funding period. ALDT has recently assumed the challenge of developing and implementing systems-based training for users of PERFORMS. Training plans are needed to determine how training of the seven modules within PERFORMS are to be developed, implemented and evaluated.
The ORISE Fellow will have the opportunity to collaborate with diverse preparedness experts to apply instructional system design elements to the development of PERFORMS training and other systems and topic areas. The Fellow would have the opportunity to leverage their creativity and critical thinking skills to train in developing innovative training activities and resources that leverage Adult Learning Principles to enhance learning to broad range of the public health workforce.
In addition, the fellow will have the opportunity to learn about public health preparedness and response operations through hands on engagement, shadowing, and mentorship by a cadre of highly experienced response professionals. Preparedness and response is a far reaching discipline and the Fellow will gain exposure to a variety of content areas such as disaster epidemiology, health education, community preparedness, and medical countermeasure response activities, as well as cover wide-ranging preparedness topical areas such as infectious disease outbreaks, radiation emergencies, chemical spills, and wildfires.
Learning Objectives: DSLR is an exciting, fast-paced working environment and the PIB community values and promotes cohesive teamwork, technical diversity, resourcefulness, proactive collaboration, and programmatic and professional excellence. This fellowship will offer a training opportunity to further develop instructional system design skills, as well as learn about public health preparedness and response through hands-on, practical experience.

Anticipated Appointment Start Date: October 1, 2022. Start date is flexible and will depend on a variety of factors.
Appointment Length: The appointment will initially be for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC and is contingent on the availability of funds.
Level of Participation: The appointment is full-time.
Participant Stipend: The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience.
Citizenship Requirements: This opportunity is available to U.S. citizens only.
ORISE Information: This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE.

The qualified candidate should have received a master's degree in one of the relevant fields. Degree must have been received within five years of the appointment start date.
