CDC Office and Location: A research opportunity is currently available in the U.S. National Authority for Containment of Poliovirus (U.S. NAC) within the Center for Preparedness and Response (CPR) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) located in Atlanta, Georgia.

The U.S. NAC is responsible for the management of a national-level survey of facilities working with poliovirus infectious and potentially infectious materials, and implementation of poliovirus containment activities in the United States. The NAC is also responsible for oversight of root cause investigation in the event a breach in poliovirus containment.

Research Project: This fellowship with the U.S. NAC will provide an opportunity to learn about public health emergency preparedness and response, and train in the development of incident management response plans. Under the guidance of a mentor, the participant will be involved in the development, piloting, and implementation of an incident response plan for the U.S. NAC to be utilized in the event of a poliovirus breach of containment in the United States. The plan will complement the National Poliovirus Response Plan but will be specific to U.S. NAC program needs and requirements. In developing the plan, the fellow will define roles and responsibilities of NAC staff members in relation to and in coordination with CPR and other Center, Institute, and Office leadership, the World Health Organization (WHO), and other internal and external stakeholders; as well as identifying incident alerts and triggers, and establishing plans for information sharing and management, reporting and notifications, continuity of operations, data collection and analysis, and conducting post-response investigation, root cause analysis, and evaluation for program improvement. This is an opportunity to gain hands-on training plan development experience through the NAC resources as well as collaboration with emergency management specialists and response planning experts from across the agency. The participant will receive online FEMA training and participate in CDC-offered emergency response training. The participant will also have opportunities to train in the development of oral and written presentations and scientific publications. All project activities are expected be performed virtually until alternate guidance is provided by CDC. Anticipated Appointment Start Date: As soon as a qualified candidate is identified.  Start date is flexible and will depend on a variety of factors.

Appointment Length: The appointment will initially be for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC and is contingent on the availability of funds.

Level of Participation: The appointment is full-time.

Participant Stipend: The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience.

ORISE Information: This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. The qualified candidate should be currently pursuing or have received a bachelor's, master's or doctoral degree in one of the relevant fields. Degree must have been received within five years of the appointment start date.
