CDC Office and Location: A research fellowship is available within the Office of the Director, Center for Global Health (CGH), at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) located in Washington, DC. 

The Center for Global Health (CGH) is at the forefront of CDC’s efforts to work with countries to build their ability to prevent, detect, and respond to infectious disease threats. The CGH Washington office, within CGH’s Office of the Director, supports this work by establishing, maintaining, and leveraging relationships interagency, external, and multilateral partners to advance CDC’s policy, communications, and programmatic priorities in support of the agency’s global health mission. 

Research Project:  The participant will collaborate with CDC staff, U.S. interagency partners (e.g., HHS, State Department, USAID, Treasury, National Security Council), multilateral organizations (e.g., World Health Organization, World Bank), and external partners to advance CDC’s global health priorities and research opportunities for CDC to be better represented among Washington, DC stakeholders. 

Under the guidance of a mentor, the participant may support the following:

  • Identify communications opportunities. Help to identify and advance strategic communications opportunities, including through op-eds, web, social media, and other avenues
    • Support efforts to document, develop engaging content, and help to communicate CDC global successes.
    • Draft Hill notifications, partner notifications, social media messages, reports, and other content to educate and inform strategic stakeholders about CDC’s global portfolio and worldwide impact
  • Special Projects. Engage in special projects as assigned. Special projects may include, but are not limited to:
    • Research past and current U.S. policy to inform interagency discussion and negotiations
    • Track global health legislation
    • Assess potential impact of U.S. policy changes on CDC global programs (e.g., preventing sexual exploitation, abuse, and harassment)
    • Support the CDC Working Group on the Complex Humanitarian Emergency in Venezuela
    • Advance Global Health Equity
  • Partner Engagement. Help to identify, initiate, and foster new collaborations with U.S. Government, non-governmental, multilateral, and private sector organizations and individuals that can help to advance strategic policy, communications, advocacy, and program goals and objectives.
    • Identify key contacts and develop actionable strategies for engaging around shared interests in global health.
    • Identify opportunities to use new partners to communicate about and advance CDC’s Global portfolio through engaging atypical or new audiences.
    • Support efforts to further develop and implement actionable strategies for engaging the private sector around shared interests in global health.

  • Understanding of global health policy and Washington, DC environment, including CDC’s role in the interagency and external partner architecture.
  • Ability to translate and communicate critical technical global health policy and programs to a wide range of audiences.
  • Capacity to interact with and operate across a variety of global health stakeholders.

Anticipated Appointment Start Date: October 24, 2022.  Start date is flexible and will depend on a variety of factors.

Appointment LengthThe appointment will initially be for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC and is contingent on the availability of funds.

Level of ParticipationThe appointment is full-time.

Participant StipendThe participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience.

ORISE InformationThis program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE.

The successful applicant(s) will be required to comply with Environmental, Safety and Health (ES&H) requirements of the hosting facility, including but not limited to, COVID-19 requirements (e.g. facial covering, physical distancing, testing, vaccination).

Qualifications

The qualified candidate should be currently pursuing or have received a bachelor's, master's, or doctoral degree in one of the relevant fields. Degree must have been received within the past five years.

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience working in global health settings and with partners such as Ministries of Health and the World Health Organization
  • Communications experience
  • Ability to handle competing priorities in a fast-paced environment
  • Professionalism and diplomacy
