A research opportunity is currently available with the Parasitic Diseases Branch (PDB), Division of Parasitic Diseases and Malaria (DPDM) within the Center for Global Health (CGH) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) located in Atlanta, Georgia.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is one of the major operation components of the Department of Health and Human Services. CDC works to protect America from health, safety and security threats, both foreign and in the U.S. Whether diseases start at home or abroad, are chronic or acute, curable or preventable, human error or deliberate attack, CDC fights disease and supports communities and citizens to do the same.
The morphology laboratory within PDB serves as a reference laboratory in the area of microscopic diagnosis of parasites. Important functions include clinical diagnosis of specimens, both from physical samples or telediagnostic images, and providing training and continuing education to state public health partners and other laboratories in the United States and abroad.
Under the guidance of the current morphology diagnostic team members, the participant will be trained in the following activities:
- Morphologic diagnosis of protozoa, helminths, and arthropods of public health importance.
- Preparation and processing of diagnostic specimens for microscopic analysis (e.g. blood, stool, whole organisms).
- Use of internal laboratory information management systems (LIMS) for the entry and transmission of test results.
- Compliance with procedures to maintain and improve on the Quality Management System (QMS) to ensure compliance with CDC guidelines and federal regulations concerning laboratory diagnostic testing on human samples (CLIA).
- Standard operating procedures and safety measures for the laboratory.
Anticipated Appointment Start Date: May 2021; start date is flexible
This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. The initial appointment can be up to one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. The appointment is full-time at CDC in the Atlanta, Georgia, area. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits.
The qualified candidate should have received a bachelor's or master's (preferred) degree in one of the relevant fields, or be currently pursuing one of the degrees with completion by the end of June 2021. Degree must have been received within five years of the appointment start date.
Preferred skills:
- Strong working knowledge of human-infecting parasites, ideally with laboratory experience
- Prior experience working in a clinical/diagnostic laboratory
- Proficiency in preparation and microscopic examination of diagnostic specimens (e.g. blood films, stool smears)
- Proven oral and written communication skills
- Experience in laboratory animal work (hamsters, gerbils)
- Experience with specimen archival database systems
- Medical laboratory certification (e.g. MLS, MLT) and/or experience in clinical laboratory settings
