A research opportunity is currently available within the Emergency Response Capacity Development Unit (ERCDU), Emergency Response and Recover Branch (ERRB), Division of Global Health Protection (DGHP) of the Center for Global Health (CGH) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) located in Atlanta, Georgia.
ERCDU is tasked with the development of trainings and provision of response capacity consultations to improve the global emergency workforce to better respond to international public health emergencies.
Under the guidance of a mentor, the participant will be trained on the development and delivery of global public health emergency preparedness activities. The participant will have the opportunity to learn about and gain hands-on experience in the following activities:
- Designing and developing curriculum in collaboration with CDC subject matter experts for CDC responders, foreign governments, and international organizations during both peacetime and response activation
- Quantitative and qualitative evaluation data collection and analysis to improve capacity development strategies
- Participating in the development of plans, procedures, and tools for more streamlined execution of capacity building activities including the provision of simulations, tabletop exercises, workshops, and in-country consultations
- Contributing to the preparation of training activities, reports, presentations, and communication materials
- Enhancing professional growth and development by participating in trainings, workshops, and meetings centered around global emergency preparedness
The participant will have the opportunity to network with subject matter experts across the agency to learn what CDC does for global public health emergencies and preparedness as well as opportunities to network with foreign govenrrments and international organizations.
Anticipated Appointment Start Date: June 1, 2020
This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. The initial appointment can be up to one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. The appointment is full-time at CDC in the Atlanta, Georgia, area. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits.
The qualified candidate should be currently pursuing or have received a master's degree in one of the relevant fields. Degree must have been received within five years of the appointment start date.
Preferred skills:
- Strong oral and written communication skills
- Willingness to travel internationally (in compliance with ORISE travel guidance/restrictions)
- Previous training experience
- Experience in or knowledge of issues in public health preparedness and response
- Proficient in Spanish, French or Portuguese (preferred but not required)
- Citizenship: LPR or U.S. Citizen
- Degree: Master's Degree received within the last 60 months or currently pursuing.
