The U.S. Army Environmental Command (USAEC) story began in 1972 when the Army created the Program Manager for Demilitarization of Chemical Materiel to manage the day-to day operations of destroying the nation's stockpile of toxic chemical agents and munitions. Over the years our role has expanded to include many new responsibilities around the world. Through all the changes, our mission of ensuring maximum use of Army training lands through sound environmental practices and stewardship remains. The Office of Operations, Planning & Programming Division at the U.S. Army Environmental Command (USAEC) is offering a bachelor's or master's level internship at the San Antonio facility in environmental compliance.
What will I be doing and why should I apply?
As an ORISE participant and under the guidance of a mentor, you will be collaborating on a wide array of tasks pertaining to environmental compliance. These learning opportunities may include project planning and management, strategic and scientific communication, environmental public participation requirements, 508 compliance, plain language act requirements, and interpretation of data to determine trends and future program requirements. Activities will include technical recommendations, collaboration on correspondence, sampling data analysis, and other similar activities.

What is the anticipated start date?
USAEC is ready to make appointments effective immediately. Exact start dates will be determined at the time of selection and in coordination with the selected candidate. Applications are reviewed on an ongoing basis and internships or fellowships will be filled as qualified candidates are identified.
What is the appointment length?
This appointment is a twelve-month research appointment, with the possibility to be renewed for additional research periods. Appointments may be extended depending on funding availability, project assignment, program rules, and availability of the participant.
What are the benefits?
You will receive a stipend to be determined by USAEC but will be in the range of $55,000.00 annually ($4,200.00/monthly). Stipends are typically based on a participant’s academic standing, discipline, experience, and research facility location. Other benefits may include the following:

About ORISE
This program, administered by Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and DoD. Participants do not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DoD or any other office or agency. Instead, you will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE. The qualified candidate should be currently pursuing or have received a bachelor's or master's degree in one of the relevant fields. Degree must have been received within five years of the appointment start date.
Best candidates will be motivated individuals with strong environmental, organizational, communication, and research skills.
