The U.S. Army Environmental Command (USAEC) is offering a Bachelor's or Master's level internship at the Fort Huachuca facility.
What will I be doing?
As an ORISE participant and under the guidance of a mentor, you will be exposed to a variety of environmental related roles that are designed to enhance your experience and knowledge. As the selected candidate, you will collect, compile, analyze and enter environmental management data for one or more program areas such as Clean Air Act, some Hazardous Waste, various aspects in the Water Quality arena and other areas. You will gain experience in laboratory testing and data compilation/calculations are for State and Federal reporting to determine compliance. Alternative/Cross training in multiple fields is highly likely and you will assist with implementation of Defense Environmental Compliance Program, specifically the Storm Water Program. In addition, you participate in the water data collection and modeling and you will learn sampling, reporting and required regulatory samples analyses techniques. Finally, in compliance with the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) and the Clean Air Act (CAA), you will be cross-trained in the Hazardous Waste and Disposal Program, and Air Program.

What is the anticipated start date?
The US Army Environmental Command is ready to make appointments effective immediately. Exact start dates will be determined at the time of selection and in coordination with the selected candidate. Applications are reviewed on an ongoing basis and internships or fellowships will be filled as qualified candidates are identified.
What is the appointment length?
This appointment is a twelve month research appointment, with the possibility to be renewed for additional research periods. Appointments may be extended depending on funding availability, project assignment, program rules, and availability of the participant.
What are the benefits?
You will receive a stipend to be determined by USAEC. Stipends are typically based on a participant’s academic standing, discipline, experience, and research facility location. Other benefits may include the following:

About ORISE
This program, administered by Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and DoD. Participants do not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DoD or any other office or agency. Instead, you will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE. The qualified candidate will be senior-level or recently graduated Bachelor's degree student OR a current or recently graduated Master's degree student . Highly desirable applicants will be those pursuing or will have received a degree in Environmental Science, Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, or Physical Science.
- Post-graduate applicants must have received their degree within the last five years
- U.S. Citizenship and driver's license is required
- Applicants must be able to pass a basic background investigation
The successful applicant(s) will be required to comply with Environmental, Safety and Health (ES&H) requirements of the hosting facility, including but not limited to, COVID-19 requirements (e.g. facial covering, physical distancing, testing, vaccination).
