About USAEC and NEPA

The U.S. Army Environmental Command (USAEC) proudly delivers environmental services and solutions in support of the Army's Environmental Program, enabling Army readiness and sustainability. For more than 40 years, USAEC has provided the knowledge, tools, and programs that support ready and resilient Soldiers, installations, and commands by balancing military training with sound environmental practices. Sound natural resources stewardship through ecosystem management is the underlying approach, and elements of the program include forest management, fish and wildlife (nongame and game), threatened and endangered species, habitat and community management, environmental awareness and environmental protection.

The National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) was signed into law on Jan. 1, 1970. The purpose of NEPA is to incorporate environmental consideration into Federal agency planning and action. It calls for the evaluation of reasonable alternatives to a proposed action, solicitation of input from those potentially affected, and an unbiased presentation of direct, indirect and cumulative impacts of implementing the proposed action. The NEPA process is the systematic examination of possible and probable environmental consequences of implementing a proposed action. Army leaders use the NEPA process to make more informed decisions.
