Description

The Fort Drum Cultural Resources Management Program is responsible for the management of cultural resources on 108,000+ acres in northern New York. This project supports various requirements to conduct baseline inventories and evaluations of archaeological and historic resources to ensure compliance with state and federal regulations and agreements including the National Historic Preservation Act, the Archaeological Resource Protection Act, the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act, and the Integrated Cultural Resources Management Plan.  The Cultural Resources Management Program is also responsible for management of the LeRay Mansion Historic District.

As a participant, you will be based at the Historic LeRay Mansion located in Fort Drum, New York.  Under the guidance of a mentor, your participation will include a variety of activities and learning objectives to create the best learning experience. Your engagement will help support researching the prehistory and history of the Mansion District and its landscape using archival, GIS, and other resources. In addition, you will be learning best practices for managing, maintaining, and restoring an historic house while meeting the Secretary of Interior standards and guidelines.  You will also be learning about organizing artifact collection materials and objects associated with the Mansion for effective and safe display and also stable long term storage. This experience will also provide you the opportunities to showcase your knowledge in creating interpretive historic displays and learning to write effective interpretive labels and supplementary display materials. With guidance from your mentor, you will also participate in community outreach and learn a number of techniques on how to share and present knowledge about the Mansion District to audiences of all ages both virtually and in person while conducting Mansion and Mansion District Tours.

Appointment Length

This appointment is a twelve month research appointment, with the possibility to be renewed for additional research periods. Appointments may be extended depending on funding availability, project assignment, program rules, and availability of the participant.  U.S. Citizenship and driver’s license is required.

Participant Benefits

Participants will receive a stipend to be determined by USAEC. Stipends are typically based on the participant’s academic standing, discipline, experience, and research facility location.  Other benefits may include the following:

  • Training and Travel Allowance

Nature of Appointment

The participant will not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DOD, or any other office or agency.  Instead, the participant will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment.

Additional Information

While participants will not enter into an employment relationship with DOD or any other agency, this opportunity will require a suitability investigation/background investigation. Any offer made is considered tentative pending favorable outcome of the investigation.

Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree in Historic Preservation, History, Museum Studies, Anthropology, Archaeology or a related field.

Interpersonal skills, excellent writing skills and knowledge with movable and immovable cultural property, archaeology, historic preservation, museum interpretation and/or related fields.

A bonus would be a candidate who is interested in a career in Heritage Preservation and is perhaps working on an advanced degree with Preservation Management as a goal.
