The Department of Defense (DoD) is offering internships/fellowships at the U.S. Army Public Health Center (APHC).Located at the Aberdeen Proving Ground in Maryland, APHC's mission is to enhance Army readiness by identifying and assessing current and emerging health threats, developing and communicating public health solutions, and assuring the quality and effectiveness of the Army's Public Health Enterprise to support the agency vision to be a world-class provider of public health services across the Army and DOD.
What will I be doing and Why should I apply?
As an ORISE participant, you will join a community of scientists and researchers in an effort to provide rapid identification and testing of ticks removed from DOD beneficiaries, and generates a robust surveillance dataset to better combat tick-borne disease risks to DOD personnel. This fellowship offers you valuable, concrete experience in an American Association for Laboratory Accreditation (A2LA) lab, with additional experience following the APHC laboratory quality system, conducting method development activities, and using an electronic laboratory information management system (LIMS). In addition to the routine MilTICK PCR-based mission, other projects may include next generation sequencing of vector-borne pathogens, real-time PCR assay development, testing mosquitoes for emerging genetic resistance to insecticides, and collaborations with academic and federal partners on vector-borne disease-related projects.
Under the guidance of a mentor, you will gain hands-on experience to complement your education and support your academic and professional goals. Along the way, you will engage in activities and research in several areas. These include, but are not limited to:

What is the anticipated start date?
APHC is ready to make appointments immediately. Exact start dates will be determined at the time of selection and in coordination with the selected candidate. Applications are reviewed on an ongoing basis and internships or fellowships will be filled as qualified candidates are identified.
What is the appointment length?
This appointment is a twelve month research appointment, with the possibility to be renewed for additional research periods. Appointments may be extended depending on funding availability, project assignment, program rules, and availability of the participant.

About ORISE
This program, administered by Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and DoD. Participants do not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DoD or any other office or agency. Instead, you will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE. The qualified candidate must be a US citizen and 18 years or older and have completed a bachelor's degree, master's degree or doctoral degree within five years or will be completed within 12 months of the appointment start date. Those with recent degrees in the fields of entomology or molecular biology are particularly encouraged to apply.
