Description

One ORISE research opportunity is available with the U.S. Army Public Health Center.  APHC is seeking a candidate who has completed either a BS and MS Level (MS preferred) in Entomology, Molecular Biology or similar technical fields. U.S. Citizenship is required.  This opportunity includes, but is not limited to the following:

The incumbent interns with the Molecular Biology Section (MBS) Tick-Borne Disease Laboratory (TBDL). The full time experience involves standardized testing of tick specimens using PCR in a DOD testing program. The internship offers valuable concrete experience in working under an associated A2LA accreditation, the APHC laboratory quality system, method development activity, and a laboratory information management system (LIMS). Tick identification, tick nucleic acid isolation, PCR screening, results reporting and data entry represent typical aspects of the internship opportunity. The TBDL provides medical personnel with tick specimen pathogen information for tick bite victims of the DOD to include Service Members and dependents. Additionally, the information gathered from testing delivers up-to-date tick borne pathogen surveillance information to installation medical, public health and environmental personnel. MBS is also in the process of expanding the current capability of the TBDL to include detection of additional infectious agents, and additional support of the Army public health enterprise surveillance missions. The incumbent would be exposed to these exciting and developing initiatives. The ORISE opportunity to experience a high-throughput laboratory at the intersection of public health, molecular biology, and entomology.

Should have completed their BS or MS Level in Entomology, Molecular Biology or similar technical fields
