Under the direction of the mentor, the participant will assist with technical procedures involving diagnostic imaging, surgery, medicine, critical or general clinical care, rehabilitation or any combination of veterinary care in support of various Department of Defense Military Working Dog Veterinary Service departments. The selected ORISE participant will learn techniques relating to all fields of veterinary medicine. This includes, but is not limited to, obtaining vital signs and patient history, administering medications and vaccinations, calculating drug dosage and fluid rates, obtaining clinical specimens, administering and monitoring anesthesia, preparing for and assisting in surgery, assisting in radiology (digital radiology, CT, ultrasound, MRI), and assisting in the rehabilitation department.
Appointment Length
This is a twelve month research appointment with the option to be renewed for additional research terms. Appointments may be extended depending on funding availability, project assignment, program rules, and availability of the participant.
Participant Benefits
Participants will receive a stipend to be determined by APHC. Stipends are typically based on the participant’s academic standing, discipline, experience, and research facility location. Other benefits may include the following:

Nature of Appointment
The participant will not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DOD, or any other office or agency. Instead, the participant will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment.
While participants will not enter into an employment relationship with DOD or any other agency, this opportunity will require a suitability investigation/background investigation. Any offer made is considered tentative pending favorable outcome of the investigation.
APHC is seeking a candidate that is currently enrolled or has recently completed an associates degree in veterinary applied science or related degree. To qualify for ORISE, candidates must have completed their degree within the past five years.
