The U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) is offering an internship.
What will I be doing?
As an ORISE participant, you will join a community of scientists and researchers in an effort to execute and administer Air Force-relevant research in projects that focus on human-human and human-machine teaming.
Why should I apply?
Under the guidance of a mentor, you can expect to take active roles in laboratory research development and execution, with projects primarily focusing on experimental design, data collection and analysis on various testing protocols, and documenting and reporting regularly to your peers and principal investigators on progress of research efforts. Other activities to enhance your learning experience may include travel to various locations for data collection, contributing to protocol writing and institutional review board approval, completing literature reviews, and collaborating with other organizations and scientists to complete research objectives.
Additional developmental opportunities will be available to you, such as gaining experience in research planning, publication, and presentation. You will be encouraged to provide input on current research efforts and participate in the development of future grant applications and protocols. The opportunity to learn how to develop protocols and research proposals will aid you in your pursuit of more advanced academic work or as a practitioner in applicable environments.
What is the anticipated start date?
AFRL is ready to make appointments immediately. Exact start dates will be determined at the time of selection and in coordination with the selected candidate. Applications are reviewed on an ongoing basis and internships will be filled as qualified candidates are identified.
What is the appointment length?
An ORISE appointment period can be a short-term (less than 2 weeks), summer (10-12 weeks), or yearlong appointment. Faculty appointments are generally for 10-12 weeks during the summer, but appointments during the academic year are also available. Appointments may be extended depending on funding availability, project assignment, program rules, and availability of the participant. The participation rate will be part-time (20 hours/week).

About AFRL
The Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) 711th Human Performance Wing (711 HPW) is a unique combination of three units: the Airman Systems Directorate (RH), the US Air Force School of Aerospace Medicine (USAFSAM) and the Human Systems Integration Directorate (HP). About ORISE
This program, administered by Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and DoD. Participants do not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DoD or any other office or agency. Instead, you will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE. The qualified candidate should currently be pursuing or recently have received a Bachelor's, Master's, or Doctoral degree. Degree must have been received within five years of the appointment start date. U.S. military veterans who have been honorably discharged (or who have been medically discharged because of a service-connected disability) and who received a a Bachelor's, Master's, or Doctoral degree within ten years of the desired start date are also eligible.
