Cognitive Neuroscience Internship - BMI/Neuromodulation Research at AFRL

The U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) is offering a bachelor level internship at the Wright-Patterson Air Force Base.
What will I be doing?
As an ORISE participant, you will join a community of scientists and researchers in an effort to apply your knowledge in cognitive neuroscience.
The AFRL Neuromodulation team is looking for an intern to participate in the preparation and completion of research studies including the opportunity to gain experience in report writing as needed. You will receive mentorship on aspects related to neuromodulation/brain stimulation research and brain machine interfaces. A large portion of this will include the development of software for real-time data processing, graphic user interface (GUI) development, and analysis and setup related to neuromodulation and Electroencephalography (EEG).

- Collecting data from human and potentially animal subjects (*will require CITI training)
- Assisting research subjects with record keeping, laboratory maintenance and experiment preparation
- Becoming familiar with cognitive testing used in this program
- Preparing subjects for physical testing, including application of sensors
- Coordinating with investigators
- Preparing reports and presentations.

What is the anticipated start date?
AFRL is ready to make appointments immediately. Exact start dates will be determined at the time of selection and in coordination with the selected candidate. Applications are reviewed on an ongoing basis and internships will be filled as qualified candidates are identified.
What is the appointment length?
This appointment is a nine month research appointment, with the possibility to be renewed for additional research periods. Appointments may be extended depending on funding availability, project assignment, program rules, and availability of the participant. The participation rate will be part-time (20 hours/week).
What are the benefits?
You will receive a stipend to be determined by AFRL. Stipends are typically based on a participant’s academic standing, discipline, experience, and research facility location. Other benefits may include the following:

About AFRL
The 711th Human Performance Wing (711 HPW), headquartered at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio, is the first human-centric warfare wing to consolidate human performance research, education, and consultation under a single organization. About ORISE
This program, administered by Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and DoD. Participants do not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DoD or any other office or agency. Instead, you will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE. The qualified candidate should currently be pursuing a bachelor's degree with a major in engineering, computer science, mathematics, psychology or related discipline.
Highly competitive applicants will have education and/or experience in one or more of the following:
- Experience with MATLAB, data, and signals processing.
- Willingness and ability to assist with Magnetic Resonance Imaging research at Dayton Children’s Hospital in the evenings on occasion.
The eligible candidate must meet the requirement to gain access to Wright-Patterson AFB, OH. A security clearance is NOT required.
