Description

We seek researchers who are interested in studying the eruption, emplacement, and modification of volcanic materials with the goal of understanding the evolution of volcanic terrains and planetary crusts throughout the Solar System. We conduct comparative planetology studies that incorporate planetary mapping and terrestrial analog field work to provide new constraints for volcanic modeling and statistical analyses. Plans for field research might also enable the participant to work with new planetary instrument technologies via field tests on planetary analogs. Field capabilities include the collection of precise topographic and thermal data enabling studies of flow dimensions, surface roughness, and thermal properties, which couple well with Goddard‘s role in spaceflight altimeters and thermal sensors. Modeling activities focus on lava flow emplacement, inflation, eruption plume dynamics and statistical analysis of volcanic vent spacing and alignments.
