A highly motivated postdoctoral associate is needed to study the “Environmental Microbiome” of the International Space Station. The selected candidate will investigate long–term, multigenerational studies of the ISS microbial population (bacteria, archaea, and fungi) dynamics. The successful candidate will identify changes in microbial populations about the environmental samples taken from surfaces and the atmosphere of the ISS utilizing “omics” techniques. The post-doctoral scholar will utilize the bioinformatics approaches to understand the molecular mechanisms of microbial changes in response to spaceflight and will use those tools for predicting how those microorganisms might impact human health (pathogens) and crew habitat (bio-deterioration) during space exploration.
Candidates must have a recent PhD (0 to 3 years of obtaining degree), a strong background in computational biology/bioinformatics. Knowledge about the microbiology and molecular biology and assay development experience is preferred. In addition, an understanding and ability to apply statistical techniques to the analysis of large data sets are a plus. Suitable candidates must also have excellent organizational and communication skills, be able to run multiple experiments, and be a creative self-starter with excellent attention to detail.
