Description
Conduct research in ocean circulation and sea level variability using satellite observations and numerical models of the ocean. A wide range of scales are of interest to the study: from the scales of ocean basin to ocean fronts and eddies; from daily variations to decadal changes. In particular, I am interested in comparing the observations to the simulations made by sophisticated ocean models with an aim to test the performance of the models for describing ocean phenomena of importance to climate change. An underlying theme of the study is to characterize the limitations in both modeling and observations. My primary interests in satellite observations are with the technique of satellite radar altimetry. A main challenge in the future is to develop high-resolution wide-swath altimetry for addressing the present limitation of conventional altimetry in observing the oceanic mesoscale and submesoscale variability that is of key importance to the energy balance of ocean circulation and its capacity for absorbing heat and carbon from the atmosphere.
