Description

Constituents of the stratosphere and troposphere including ozone play a crucial role in the biosphere-ocean-atmosphere system. Our work focuses on using information from satellite remote sensing (Aura, Suomi NPP, DSCOVR, UARS), suborbital aircraft missions (ATom, HIPPO), and ground-based observation networks (NDACC, SHADOZ, Pandora) in concert with the Goddard Earth Observing System Chemistry-Climate Model (GEOSCCM) and a Chemistry and Transport Model (CTM) to develop process-level understanding of atmospheric composition, its variability, geophysical trends, and future evolution. Knowledge of stratospheric and tropospheric chemistry, radiation, and dynamics is necessary for understanding distributions and trends in these constituents as well as human-induced changes from ozone depleting substances and greenhouse gases. This understanding must be derived in the presence of natural variability as a result of various sources of global change and by using a combination of modeling and observations.
