Heliophysics Science: Macroscopic Properties of the Solar Wind
Current tasks include (1) the variation of properties of the solar wind with heliocentric radius, (2) the propagation of shocks and other transients, and (3) the relationship between macroscopic properties of the solar wind and coronal structure. Multiple modern techniques are employed to investigate this question including triangulation of radio waves (such as using Wind, STEREO and Cassini observations) and tracking of features in white light heliospheric imager data (STEREO and the upcoming Solar Probe Plus and Solar Orbiter missions). All of these remote sensing techniques are combined with in-situ measurements of magnetic fields and solar wind thermal particles, such as made from ACE, Wind, STEREO, Voyagers, and the future Solar Probe Plus and Solar Orbiter missions. Laboratory personnel are active members of all of these instrument and data analysis teams.
