Description

Description:

Habitability is defined by the metabolic challenges and opportunities that exist in an environment. Predicting habitability requires a complete knowledge of the physical setting of an environment and the biochemistry and physiology of its likely inhabitants. Oceans Across Space and Time (OAST) seeks to understand how biological communities and physical settings shape habitability, and the limits of habitability in key analog environments. Project outcomes will help guide life detection missions by identifying probable signatures of life in these environments, and by improving our understanding of where and how these signatures are distributed. OAST is a highly interdisciplinary collaboration between Cornell University, Scripps Institution of Oceanography, Georgia Tech, Blue Marble Space Institute of Science, Louisiana State University, Stanford University, Dartmouth University, and Kansas University. Project participants are strongly encouraged to develop collaborations across the range of expertise available within OAST.
