Description
The structure of planetary rings and the nature of their constituent particles are being investigated, both theoretically and observationally. Problems under investigation include local and regional variations in abundance, size, color, and brightness of the particles in the ring systems of all four gas giant planets; the nature of the interaction between a ring and nearby ""moonlets"" and the onset of chaotic behavior in ensembles of ring-moons; the compositional and structural evolution of a ring system under meteoroid erosion; and the origin and evolution of ring-moon systems in general. Direct access to the extensive Cassini dataset on Saturn's rings, and several analysis tools for image and near-IR spectral data, are available. Ames collaborates closely with the designated Discipline Node for Planetary Rings on the Planetary Data System (SETI Institute).
