Description

Research into planetary atmospheres includes observational and theoretical components based on our solar system, as well as new observations of extra-solar planets. We use observations of planetary radiation-budgets, orbital configurations, temperature-soundings, photometric, and polarization measurements from a various orbiters and telescopes. Modeling includes interpretation of radiation measurements of planets to deduce bulk atmospheric composition and thermal structure, and the nature and distribution of clouds and aerosols. Research in atmospheric dynamics uses data from the Cassini Imaging Science Subsystem to document the global circulation and cloud patterns on Saturn and Titan, with special emphasis on how moist convection interacts with the larger-scale dynamics. Emphasis in the theoretical program is on the use of comprehensive general circulation models as comparative planetology tools to define the habitable zone for extra-solar planets, and to build links across all terrestrial planet climate models, including Earth.
