Description

The Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) Science, Technology and Policy (STP) Program serves as a next step in the educational and professional development of scientists and engineers by providing opportunities to participate in policy-related projects at DOE's Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy in Washington, D.C.  Participants will become part of a group of highly-trained scientists and engineers with the education, background, and experience to be part of the workforce that supports the DOE's mission in the future.

The participant will learn and develop in the areas of AMO developing, managing and conducting technical analysis, focusing on creating plans and resources to promote the implementation of ISO 50001 as well as researching and assessing new techniques to advance energy management and energy practices in alignment with ISO 50001 across industrial, commercial and institutional customers. ISO 50001 is a global practice of organization-wide energy optimization and sustainability that has been shown to lead to large, sustained energy savings across of sectors. The participant will receive hands on experience and learn to:

• Engage collaboratively to develop resources leading to increased ISO 50001 implementation
• Collaborate with AMO TP Supervisor and ISO 50001 Team in managing program deliverables
• Determine resource needs and assessing technical options to meet program goals
• Contribute to written reports and papers on program research or findings
• Develop and execute data analysis findings and case studies, producing graphical and written findings
• Evaluate and propose ideas to advance software solutions (to assess energy performance improvement opportunities)
• Monitor partner and project performance to meet program requirements
• Contribute to regulatory and policy discussions and concepts related to utility energy efficiency incentive programs and ISO 50001

Research topics and main potential partners may include, but are not limited to, the following:
• Industrial, commercial and institutional energy systems and processes
• Measurement and verification of energy performance improvements
• Analysis in support of energy and water conservation targets
• Industrial and municipal waste water and water desalination technologies

Participant Benefits

Selected candidates will receive a stipend as support for their living and other expenses during this appointment. Stipend rates are determined by EERE officials and are based on the candidate’s academic and professional background. Relocation expenses, not to exceed $5,000, incurred in relocating from the participant's current address to Washington, D.C. (if more than 50 miles from the address shown on the application), may be reimbursed. Participants will receive a travel allowance of $10,000 per appointment year to cover travel-related expenses to scientific and professional development activities.

Nature of Appointment

The participant will not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DOE, or any other office or agency.  Instead, the participant will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE letter of appointment and Terms of Appointment.

A Bachelors degree is required. A Master's or Ph.D. is beneficial but not required.
