The Science Mission Directorate Bridge Program is a new initiative designated to boost diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility within the NASA workforce and within the U.S. science and engineering community. It aims to increase engagement and partnering between Minority-Serving Institutions (MSIs), such as Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and Tribal Colleges and Universities (TCUs), Primarily Undergraduate-Serving Institutions (PUIs), other PhD granting Universities, and NASA Centers with a focus on paid research and engineering studentships at participating institutions to transition science and engineering students from undergraduate studies into graduate schools and employment by NASA.
The successful NPMP applicant will play a critical and powerful role in the design and implementation of this program. The Fellow will work closely with scientists in all divisions at NASA Headquarters and the Director of the Program and will gain useful knowledge, experience, and understanding of NASA’s Science Mission Directorate and its processes for shaping missions, programs, and teams. The Fellow will network with a broad array of scientists and other professionals at Universities, NASA Centers, and in SMD at NASA Headquarters at all career levels by, for example, helping to plan and facilitate community workshops to collaboratively engage with all stakeholders. The Fellow will help shape all aspects of the program from helping to set goals and expectations, design a call for proposals, organize and support the proposal review and selection, and help manage new awards.
Proposals in response to this opportunity should include a research element to perform a relevant investigation on topics related to STEM diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Applications are encouraged from individuals with PhDs in any NASA SMD science area, STEM higher education, anthropology or sociology. The ideal candidate will have relevant expertise and drive to build long-lasting partnerships between students, mentors, HBCUs/MSIs, and NASA Centers with the goal of increasing diversity within the U.S. science and engineering communities, including the NASA workforce.
